This is two steps lower from 144th ranked in 2018. The Transparency International (TI) has placed Nigeria on number 149 in its Corruption Perception Index for 2020. There are 183 countries reviewed with Nigeria sliding 13 places in the ranking. Despite the celebrated declaration of war against corruption, Nigeria’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) appears to continually go down. For instance, the Transparency International in its Corruption Perception Index, (CPI) ranked Nigeria as the second most corrupt nation in the world for three consecutive years: 2001, 2002 and 2003. In the 2019 Transparency International’s corruption perception index released on Thursday, Nigeria scored 26 out of 100 points, falling by one point compared to 2018. It is important to mention that the Corruption Perception Index aggregates data from eight different sources that provide perceptions by Nigeria’s business community and country experts on the level of corruption in the public sector, and for what we care, the perceptions or views may be informed by certain biases and sentiments, particularly for events as the EndSARS protest and the Nigeria has dropped to 149 on Transparency International’s 2020 Corruption Perception Index, the worst ranking received by Africa’s largest country in recent time.
